Five New Boat Winners in 2014 CCA Louisiana STAR as Youth Division Winners are Announced
The CCA Louisiana Statewide Tournament and Angler’s Rodeo held the random drawing for the Youth Division prize winners, making five new youth anglers, new boat owners.
The Youth Division, sponsored by Academy Sports + Outdoors, has four regional winners in Louisiana and one in Mississippi. All youth winners will receive a 14’ aluminum boat package complete with a 15hp Mercury and McClain Trailer, donated by Cajun Outboards.
The Louisiana winners are: East: Matthew Verges; Southeast: Stephen Schwartz; Southwest: Isaac Wiggins II; West: Liam Dunn and the Mississippi Youth Division winner is Mason Page.
Verges, a 10-year-old angler fishing with his dad, caught his speckled trout on July 4th in Hopedale. He measured his fish, took a picture of it and submitted it to STAR tournament director Rad Trascher in hopes of being picked in the drawing.
“This is one of the best parts of the tournament for me,” Trascher said. “Calling all of these youngsters and parents to tell them about winning a new boat is a great experience. Thanks to Academy Sports + Outdoors, Cajun Outboards, Mercury and Mike Gerald’s Trailer Depot for continuing to support these great divisions.”
Wiggins and Dunn also submitted their catches via email, a practice that has been a part of STAR since 2011.
When the drawings concluded and the phone calls to parents were made is when the real excitement started.
“I can’t wait to tell my son that he won,” Matthew Verges’ dad, Michael said. “He will be so excited.”
Cutoff angler Jake Duet wins Chevy Truck as STAR Tagged Redfish Continue to be Caught
Things certainly have heated up in the CCA Louisiana STAR tournament in the past 24 hours, as tagged redfish have been appearing on the end of fishing lines from Timbalier to Lafitte.
Late Sunday evening, 19-year-old Jake Duet from Cutoff caught a tagged redfish at the East Timbalier rocks. Lucky for him, he had just signed up for the STAR tournament at Port Fourchon Marina on Thursday ahead of the Fourchon Oilman’s Fishing Tournament. Weighing his fish first thing Monday morning at Bridgeside Marina, Duet was thrilled with his catch.
“After catching the fish I realized all the weigh stations would be closed on Sunday night, so I had to wait until today to bring it in.” said Duet, “I didn’t sleep at all that night.”
Duet’s tagged redfish lands him a 2014 Chevy Silverado courtesy of the Super Chevy Dealers of Baton Rouge, Acadiana and Lake Charles.
“I know CCA and the Super Chevy Dealers couldn’t be happier to give this great young man a truck,” said Rad Trascher, STAR Tournament Director. “Duet’s winning fish was released at the Fourchon Bridge and made its way all the way out to Timbalier. That fish was on the move.”
