What? The 2006 Derelict Crab-trap Removal Project.

For the third consecutive year CCA Louisiana, The Louisiana Legislature and The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries have teamed up to clean up our coast, one trap at a time.

Who? We need you…and your Boat!

Why? Because you’re tired of seeing ghost crab-traps in your favorite fishing holes, tangled in your prop…and you care about our coast. In the past two years 130 volunteer boat crews have removed a staggering 11,500 derelict crab traps…but we’re not resting with past success.

How? The La. Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries (with help from the Legislature) will close the crab season in the southwest Terrebonne Bay estuary from 6:00 a.m., March 4th, through 6:00a.m. March 12th. During that period all crab traps remaining in the water are considered derelict.

Volunteers along with Wildlife and Fisheries personnel will retrieve derelict traps and bring them to two designated collection points for recycling:

1) Theriot: Falgout Canal Landing located at LA Hwy. 315, (985) 872-1636.

2) Dularge: Indian Ridge Plantation LLC, (near the end of LA Hwy. 315, 100 yards below the protection levee).

While volunteering your boat, maritime skill, and time is best, we still need help at the collection points. It’s a great project for service organizations, church groups, civic clubs or scouts.

LDWF personnel will be present at each disposal site on the designated
volunteer days beginning at 7:30 a.m. and remaining until approximately
4:00 p.m. to distribute instructions, maps, and supplies (tarps, grappling hooks, garbage bags, and gloves) to waterborne volunteers, and to assist with the unloading and disposing of retrieved derelict traps.

When & Where?
The southwest Terrebonne Bay estuary: (Theriot, Lake de Cade, Lake Mechant, Lost Lake, Four League Bay, Lake Caillou...and most points in between).
Primary volunteer days are Sat., March 4th and Sat., March 11. (Winter closure of the crab season is from 6:00 a.m., March 4, through 6:00a.m. March 13).

*Reminder: When picking up derelict traps, crab season is closed (please release captured crabs).
