CCA Louisiana opposes environmental threat E-mail
The Coastal Conservation Association of Louisiana opposes liquid natural gas facilities using the open-loop system. Due to the adverse impact on marine fishery resources, CCA Louisiana continues its on-going stand by taking its formal opposition to the President and the White House’s Council on Environmental Quality.

CCA Louisiana continues to recommend all LNG processing facilities being constructed in or offshore Louisiana be required to use a closed-loop system when heating the liquid gas back to its natural gaseous state.

The open-loop systems could filter up to millions of gallons of water per day in the regassification process and would kill billions of fish eggs, larvae and plankton each year. The impact on Louisiana ’s coastal waters could be devastating. On the other hand, closed-loop systems use a limited amount of water and cause much less harm to the area biota. Efficient technology exists which would facilitate usage of closed-loop systems, and CCA continues to encourage its use by those applying for permits to build these facilities.

“We have always put conservation of the resource first,” said CCA Louisiana President Nelson Roth, Jr. “Until such a time as our concerns about open-loop systems can be addressed, we are forced to oppose their permitting.”

CCA Louisiana joins CCA Texas and a number of state and federal agencies, including the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council ; Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission; Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission; Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department which have voiced similar concerns regarding open-loop LNG facilities.
