Overview of January 2010 Freeze on Coastal Fisheries |
|
|
WLF reports that January freeze had minimal effect on finfish populations In a recently published document, The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says that while numerous fish kills were reported after the January 2010 freeze, the reported kills were of “relatively small size and likely had negligible effect on overall species population sizes.” Fish kills were observed in areas such as Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Borne, Lake Menchant, Hackberry Lake and White Lake and included white trout, drum, sheepshead, and “a few” speckled trout. In the report, LDWF indicates that the impact on the fisheries resource was minimal when compared to the December 1989 freeze. To view the complete LDWF report, please click here .
