Jeffrey LaCoste and his girlfriend Brenda Wasson were fishing out of their bay boat for the first time last Saturday.
The only thing they didn’t have was tickets to fish the CCA Louisiana S.T.A.R., costing the New Orleans native and life-long angler a chance to have a brand new Chevrolet Silverado to tow their new boat. “My girlfriend helped me land the fish and made a comment about how pretty it was and that it had a red tag along the dorsal fin,” LaCoste said. “I wish I had known about the tournament and had registered for the S.T.A.R., especially since the truck I’m driving right now is 11 years old and has about 250,000 miles on it.” That red tag was one of the 50 special S.T.A.R tags that have been attached to redfish swimming in some of South Louisiana’s most popular fishing locations. LaCoste’s redfish came from the rock jetties near the mouth of the Chef Menteur Pass. Another tagged fish was caught and released earlier this summer east of Grand Isle near Four Bayous Pass by an angler who also had not registered for the S.T.A.R. Both anglers missed out on the chance to win a brand new Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck for being the first S.T.A.R. registered angler to weigh in a tagged redfish. LaCoste said he wasn’t very familiar with the CCA and S.T.A.R. before catching the redfish that could have been. “The boat I bought has a ‘Join CCA’ redfish sticker on the windshield and I wondered what exactly it stood for,” he said. “Now I know. And I can promise you that me and my girlfriend will be CCA members and register for the S.T.A.R. from here on out.” The CCA-Louisiana/Mercury Outboards Statewide Tournament and Angler’s Rodeo is the longest and richest tournament in coastal Louisiana, running each summer for 101 days from Memorial Day to Labor Day. It features more than $500,000 in total prizes including 22 water-ready boat packages all rigged with Mercury Outboards, a Harley Davidson for the winner of this year’s new Largemouth Bass Division as well as tackle packages worth $5,000 to the winners of the Dorado, Amberjack and King Mackerel Divisions. S.T.A.R.’s signature division is the tagged redfish category where as many as nine 211 Mako Bay Boats powered by 150 horsepower Mercury Outboards and riding on McClain Trailers will be awarded to S.T.A.R. participants after the Chevrolet Silverado is claimed. “Every year we have to tell the story of anglers who could be driving a new truck or a new boat if they had only registered for the S.T.A.R,” said CCA-Louisiana Tournament Director Sam Barbera. “Bottom line is, with 11 biggest fish divisions, special divisions for kids and ladies, six boats to be given away in the speckled trout divisions alone and the new Largemouth Bass Division, you’d have to be crazy to fish in Coastal Louisiana without being registered for the S.T.A.R.” More information about the tournament is available and anglers can easily register for S.T.A.R. by logging on to www.CCALouisiana.com, by calling the S.T.A.R. registration hotline at 1-877-4CCASTAR (1-877-422-2782) or by calling the CCA office at 225-952-9200. Additionally, there are 12 instant entry locations throughout South Louisiana where anglers can register in person. For more information about the CCA Louisiana/Mercury Outboard S.T.A.R., please contact Sam Barbera at 225-952-9200. |
